The pod sealed with a soft hiss. My palms began to sweat and I swallowed hard as my body shook in anticipation.
A thin mist spilled from hidden vents, curling around my ankles, my wrists, my throat.
The glass above me fogged almost immediately, turning the ceiling into a dull blur of light and shadow.
“Sedation protocol engaged,” a voice murmured somewhere, too calm, too far away.
My eyelids grew heavy. Time loosened. Thoughts drifted in fragments, slipping out of reach before I could hold onto them.
Waking me from my daze, a violent jolt snapped through the pod.
The walls shuddered. The floor lurched beneath me as a deep, concussive sound tore through the chamber.
An explosion, I saw the room fill with a brilliant light and was hit with a harsh, insulting echo in my skull.
Dust rained down in thick clouds, clogging the air, scratching at my lungs. The mist thinned, replaced by smoke and some kind of foul odor.
The pod rocked again, harder this time, metal screaming somewhere nearby.
My heart slammed against my chest.
“What…” My voice came out hoarse, swallowed by the chaos.
Another blast.
Closer.
A sharp crack split across the glass above me, spider-webbing from one corner to the other. The lights flickered, then died completely, plunging everything into dim emergency red.
The pod shook violently.
“No,” I whispered, bracing my hands against the sides as the restraints released with a mechanical snap I didn’t recognize.
The glass fractured.
With a final, brittle sound, the door burst outward, slamming into the floor.
Cold air rushed in.
Dust.
Shouts.
Footsteps pounding.
I coughed, disoriented, my head swimming as I pushed myself upright.
A figure appeared in the dull haze, his clothing held no memorable markings until I saw a subtle symbol engraved on his wrist.
“You’re a Shadow.” I mumbled.
His eyes were alert, scanning, and calculating the destruction around us.
“Get up!” he shouted, grabbing my arm. “Come on! We’re going, now.”
“I..I can’t..” My knees buckled as soon as I tried to stand. The room spun violently, my vision narrowing.
“Shit,” he muttered.
I dropped to the cold metal floor. He swore again, hauling me back up before I could collapse completely.
“Stay with me,” he said urgently, tightening his grip. “Don’t you dare!”
The last thing I felt was his arm around my shoulders as the noise closed in and everything went dark.
